ALBERT ANASTASIA was co-boss of Murder Inc., the enforcement arm of the National Crime Syndicate, and later boss of the Anastasia crime family from 1951 to 1957. Also nicknamed “The One-Man Army,” Anastasia was one of the most ruthless and feared mobsters of his generation.

This mugshot is from a 1936 arrest for murder at age 34, charges that were later dropped when all the witnesses either refused to testify or mysteriously disappeared. This was one of several murder raps that The Mad Hatter dodged under similar circumstances. Anastasia was shot to death in a barber shop in 1957 at age 55; his murder is still unsolved to this day.
